Sustainable development  - 12 mars 2012

The Communauté urbaine du Grand Nancy and Caisse des Dépôts signed on 9 March a partnership agreement on sustainable development for 2012-2014. It comes in 5 main lines: housing, city, University, companies and economic attractiveness, environmental protection.

Greater Nancy is testing out its 6th local housing programme (PLH) based on sustainable city and urban ecology objectives. The PLH, formulated through a process of themed and local working groups in which Caisse des Dépôts is involved, has other shared objectives, such as the thermal rehabilitation of social and private housing stock, or the pursuit of quality student accommodation.

As part of its urban renewal project, one of the biggest in France at a cost of €500mn, Greater Nancy is committed to the development of eco-districts*.  As far as transport policy is concerned, the loan and financial support packages provided by Caisse des Dépôts will help to enhance the consistency and technical and economic feasibility of the projects selected.

Greater Nancy was a source of major support for the creation of the Université de Lorraine in 2011. Partners of the University, which has a student roll of 65,000 plus 6,800 faculty and staff, focused particularly on conditions for the structuring of university sites as eco-campuses, and on funding the construction of Artem, an alliance between three of Nancy’s leading post-graduate schools.**

In order to develop its jobs and wealth potential, the urban community is proposing a business-friendly environment and promoting innovation as a growth factor, particularly through the development of urban free zones in priority neighbourhoods. Over the past seven years, 300 companies have set up operations at Les Nations in Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy and on the Plateau de Haye, creating 1,350 jobs. Caisse des Dépôts will support the development of this new offering of sustainable business real estate.

Finally, Greater Nancy will pursue the development of renewable energies and the reduction of energy consumption in public buildings, issues on which Caisse des Dépôts is in a position to provide its support.

* 2 of the urban community’s eco-district project have won awards: the Nancy Grand Cœur station district (mobility 2009), and the Plateau de Haye (Grand Prix in the national eco-district rankings, November 2011).

** Ecole nationale supérieure des Mines, Ecole nationale supérieure d’art and the ICN-Business School group.
