CDC Climat is offsetting the carbon emissions of CDC Entreprises
Carbon financial services - 09 February 2012
For the 3rd year, CDC Entreprises decided to offset the greenhouse gases emitted during the Investors Annual Forum that it organized on 10 October, in Paris, and those concerning its information systems. To do so, and to insure its future offsettings, CDC Entreprises signed an agreement with CDC Climat.
Thus, for 2011, CDC Entreprises is purchasing from CDC Climat an offset service based on carbon credits generated by the La Hormiga and El Beloto landfill sites in Chile, which are managed by a recently created French company.
In Chile, as in most developing or emerging countries, fly tipping is still the rule, due to a lack of resources and of waste management expertise. However, the methane emitted by landfills is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2 and is also harmful and unpleasant for residents. On the Chilean sites, the methane is burnt. Putting a value on the emissions avoided in this way in the form of carbon credits is what ensures the profitability of clean waste management. Lastly, maintaining these sites on a long-term basis, which relies on technology transfers, contributes to local employment and to a reduction in urban pollution.
CDC Entreprises is thus supporting a project which not only has numerous environmental, social and economic benefits but is also consistent with its role of supporting the development of high-growth companies.
