Compagnie des Alpes shows a good S1

The Futuroscope 25 years (c) Futuroscope

Leisure activities economy  - 07 May 2012

After a very good winter season for Ski Slopes and a good performance of Leisure Parks, consolidated sales of the Compagnie des Alpes Group for the 1st half-year 2011/2012 amounts to €394mn, increasing by 8.3% for real perimeter (4.9% like-for-like).

A very good winter season for the ski areas

Sales of the ski areas for the 1st half-year 2011/2012 increased by 3.8% to €328mn, after an increase of more than 3% in the 1st half-year 2010/2011. The number of skier days increased by 2% during the period.

The 1st quarter of the year (Christmas holidays) showed an increase of 0.9% to €62mn despite an unfavourable calendar and partial or total closures of certain areas due to bad weather.

The 2nd quarter produced a large increase in sales at 4.5% with the French winter holidays and shoulder season of January-February having seen a particularly sustained level of activity.

The end of season activity benefited from the positioning of the Easter weekend and indicates an increase on the ski areas activity for the whole of the season.

Leisure parks : A good first half-year

The leisure parks activity is of little significance in the 1st half-year. It only represents 15% of annual activity. Nevertheless, the half-yearly sales showed an increase in actual terms of nearly on the same basis of 38% to €65mn due, in particular, to the inclusion of the Futuroscope. Excluding consolidation scope effects, the increase amounted to nearly 10%.

The 1st half-year saw a very good beginning, supported by the parks opened during the Autumn holidays and the success of the Christmas trees at the Astérix Park.

The start of the 3rd quarter was penalized by dull weather but the season should benefit from the anniversary celebrations of the major leisure parks (25th anniversary of the Futuroscope in particular). Since 7 April, the Astérix Park has presented its new show attraction, OzIris, an inverted roller coaster in a new Egyptian environment, which increases the surface area of the park by nearly 3 hectares.

The strategy to relaunch the Walibi brand has confirmed its success, with a double digit increase in the attendance of the 4 Walibi parks during the 1st half-year.
