A responsible investor's practices
Caisse des Dépôts integrates the ESG (environment, social, governance) factors into its investment decision-making processes. It regularly raises environmental and societal issues with the companies of which it is a shareholder.
Management of listed shares
For the management of the listed shares, the analysis of the ESG risks of the companies of which Caisse des Dépôts is a shareholder is systematically taken into account.
Caisse des Dépôts uses the services of Vigeo and Innovest, agencies which assess and rate the social and environmental aspects of a company, particularly to evaluate compliance with criteria defined by the UN’s World Pact.
Caisse des Dépôts also uses experts in order to evaluate the companies’ commitment to social responsibility.
Management of fixed income assets
For the management of the fixed income assets, the analysis of the ESG risks of the companies of which Caisse des Dépôts is a shareholder is systematically taken into account.
Moreover, the Department of Risks and of Internal Monitoring evaluates the environmental, social and governance impacts of these companies.
Specific criteria concern the State issuers. The lowest-scoring States with regard to social issues are excluded from the investment sphere, as are countries which do not cooperate in the fight against laundering.
Management of property assets
Caisse des Dépôts integrates the ESG criteria when investing in new property, as well as into the management of its existing property.
This leads to a better evaluation of the property, via compulsory technical diagnostics such as the Energy Performance Diagnostic, and by taking into consideration a series of factors (global cost, location in disadvantaged areas, quality of the materials, etc.).
Caisse des Dépôts has set the analysis and improvement of the energy performance of the buildings in its portfolio as a priority. The CO2 impact of its property portfolio was measured in 2008.
The management of Caisse des Dépôts’ forestry assets integrates sustainable forestry management practices.
Management of non-listed assets and supporting the social responsibility of SMEs
Caisse des Dépôts invests in non-listed assets and in risk-capital funds, managed with the aim of diversification and long-term investment.
There is regular communication with the administrators of the investment capital funds (private equity), in order to encourage them to consider the environmental, social and governance factors.
