Investments for the future: €25mn for the development of a freight transport airship

LCA60T project, which concerns the development of an airship for the transport of heavy loads and represents an R&D investment of €61mn over 4 years, is financed €25mn by the Programme of Investments for the Future led by the General Secretariat for Investment and operated by Bpifrance within the framework of the R&D Structuring for competitiveness call for projects.

Le LCA60T de Flying Whales

The LCA60T project* is being steered by Flying Whales, an innovative young company with shareholders that include Office national des forêts or ONF (National Board of Forestry), the Chinese national aeronautics group Avic and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region; it is collaborating with its partners in science (Onera) and in industry (Epsilon Composite, Zodiac Aerosafety Systems, REEL et Tecalemit Aerospace).

The LCA60T will have a load capacity of 60 tons and will be destined for the timber extraction, freight and abnormal load transport markets. Originally designed to meet the needs of ONF (timber extraction in areas where access is difficult), the LCA60T’s purpose was to provide the answer to various logistics and inaccessibility problems worldwide, since it can circumvent transport infrastructures (roads, airports and ports). Its load-bearing capacity is primarily guaranteed by the buoyancy of the helium gas, which makes this aircraft an economical solution with a low carbon footprint.
