This building site is currently the largest hospital site in France. Centre hospitalier de Libourne is the second general hospital in Aquitaine. Its patient catchment area goes beyond the current borders of Aquitaine into Eastern Dordogne (Limousin) and Southern Charentes (Poitou-Charentes).

The project consists of retaining technical expertise and recent services outside a single unit, and linking them to a modern, modular building for hospitalisation and consultation. The project was declared to be in the general interest by a decision taken by the Regional Prefect. The investment of 163.5mn is supported by Agence régionale de santé (ARS – Regional Health Agency) and monitored by Inspection générale des affaires sociales (Igas – Inspectorate General of Social Affairs).
