The objective of the change is to correct malfunctions and maintenance difficulties in the system. This major modification of an existing system in service is a first in France, with many technical challenges. In addition, there was the ambition to reduce the duration of the worksite to a minimum: 15 months of work for the transformation and extensions of the line, 11 months for the construction of the maintenance centre.
The organisation of the worksite also had to take into account the putting into service of 50 articulated buses to replace the tram during the works: the line currently carried 40,000 passengers per day, half of the urban transport network of the urban community.
The operation allowed two line extensions: one to the future tram maintenance centre and the other to the Presqu'île sector. The network now includes 16.2 km of infrastructure and 37 stations served by 23 train set.
With the ageing of existing systems, this type of hard transformation or renewal operation could develop. An atypical project where Egis has fully assumed its role as project owner and demonstrated its ability to integrate the various technical specificities, plan and coordinate a major project.
