Paris: Caisse des Dépôts invests in Hype hydrogen taxis

On 12 July, Caisse des Dépôts completed its purchase of Société du taxi électrique parisien (STEP) stock. The company operates Hype brand hydrogen taxis in Paris. Caisse des Dépôts is so contributing to the decrease of the environmental footprint of demand responsive transport in town.

The Hype taxi fleet currently deployed comprises some fifteen vehicles driven by employed drivers. Available in the street or at ranks just like any Paris taxi, the service offered by Hype will soon be supplemented by a booking centre which can be accessed online and on smartphones.

This investment from Caisse des Dépôts, which as such has become a minority shareholder in the company, alongside the Air Liquide group, is in line with its objective of contributing to the emergence of intelligent and sustainable mobility.

It will enable Hype to finance its development, with the goal of

  • rolling out 600 vehicles across Paris by 2020;
  • making this innovative solution available in other large French cities;
  • eventually breaking into the international market.

    The company has also received finance support from many local authorities, including the City of Paris and the Ile-de-France Region.

The hydrogen taxi is an electric vehicle powered by a hydrogen battery, which produces electricity using the hydrogen stored in its reservoir and oxygen from the air. The vehicle only emits water vapour, and generates no noise emissions whatsoever. The battery life of hydrogen cars is over 500km, i.e. 2 to 3 times greater than a battery-powered electric vehicle, and the battery usually charges in under 5 mins.
